Every SOLAS-classed vessel must clearly identify the wheelhouse, the compartment from which the vessel is steered and its navigation and communication equipment is operated, so that crew, visitors, and emergency responders can locate it without delay. The LA0046-B wheelhouse sign is the photoluminescent marker that does exactly that: a green background carrying the bold “WHEELHOUSE” designation, glowing brightly enough to remain legible even after main lighting has failed.
Because this sign combines a clear text designation with the same photoluminescent green format used across a vessel’s life-saving and emergency signage, it reads instantly for a multinational crew, a port state control inspector, or an unfamiliar visitor moving through the superstructure. That consistent formatting is exactly why SOLAS Chapter III and the LSA Code call for standardised compartment and equipment marking aboard a vessel, and it is why shipowners fit the same style of wheelhouse sign fleet-wide.
The wheelhouse is the nerve centre of the vessel’s navigation and command function, and during an emergency, drill, or unfamiliar boarding, crew and visitors need to find it immediately without wandering through the superstructure. A clearly marked wheelhouse sign lets anyone identify the correct compartment at a glance, whether they are heading there to report a fault, respond to a call from the bridge, or simply orient themselves aboard an unfamiliar vessel.
The sign also plays a role well beyond day-to-day navigation. During musters, safety rounds, and flag-state or class surveys, inspectors check that key compartments including the wheelhouse are clearly and consistently marked in line with the vessel’s safety plan. A missing or faded wheelhouse sign is a common finding on port state control inspections, and rectifying it after the fact is far more disruptive than fitting a compliant sign during the original outfit.
This sign is manufactured to the format required under SOLAS Chapter III and the LSA Code, which set out equipment carriage and marking requirements for life-saving and navigational appliances on ships of all classes. The photoluminescent substrate meets IMO photoluminescence performance standards, meaning the wheelhouse sign continues to glow for an extended period after the loss of ambient light, satisfying low-location and emergency-lighting marking expectations that class societies look for during survey.
Using the correct, standardised compartment designation also keeps a vessel’s safety plan consistent with what is physically fitted onboard. Safety plans, muster lists, and crew familiarisation drills all reference standard compartment names, so a sign that departs from the recognised wheelhouse designation can create confusion during an audit or an actual emergency response.
Mount the LA0046-B sign directly on or immediately beside the wheelhouse door or entrance, at a height and angle that keeps it visible from the main approach corridor or exterior deck access. Position the sign clear of door hardware, hinges, or fittings that could obscure it, since photoluminescent material needs direct exposure to ambient or emergency lighting to charge properly.
Clean the surface before fitting with marine-grade adhesive or mechanical fixings appropriate to the substrate — painted steel, GRP, or timber-faced door — and avoid placing the sign where door swing or foot traffic could cause repeated contact damage.
Fit LA0046-B at the wheelhouse entrance and keep a spare in the ship’s safety locker so a damaged sign can be replaced without delay — a small, inexpensive item that keeps a vessel’s key compartments easy to find and audit-ready.
Wheelhouse signage is one part of a complete life-saving and shipboard marking package. Explore our Hazard Signs range for onboard hazard identification, or the Fire Fighting Signs range to complete marking of fire-fighting stations and appliances throughout the vessel.
