This embarkation ladder sign marks a fixed or portable ladder that leads from the deck down to the waterline, used to board a life raft, rescue boat, or pilot boat, or to recover people directly from the water. The pictogram’s simple ladder-into-water design lets crew identify the boarding point at a glance, even when normal walkways and stairwells are obstructed.
Embarkation ladders are positioned at designated survival craft stations so that once a lifeboat or life raft is launched and lying alongside, remaining crew and passengers can climb down safely rather than jumping or being lowered individually. This embarkation ladder sign is placed at the exact point the ladder is stowed or deployed, keeping the boarding sequence orderly during an abandon-ship drill or a real emergency.
Like the rest of the vessel’s escape route signage, this embarkation ladder sign is photoluminescent, charging under normal lighting and continuing to glow for hours in a blackout, so the ladder’s position stays visible even after main power is lost.
