This rescue sling sign marks the stowage location of a rescue sling, also known as a recovery sling or MOB recovery sling. It is a horseshoe-shaped support that fits under a casualty’s arms so they can be lifted from the water without needing to climb or assist in their own recovery, making it suited to situations where a person in the water is injured, exhausted, or unconscious and cannot use a boarding ladder or scramble net unaided.
Recovery slings of this kind have become standard equipment on many vessels following SOLAS regulation III/17-1, which requires ships to have plans and equipment in place for recovering persons from the water. The sling is typically deployed from a crane, davit, or purpose-built recovery arm, with the casualty’s torso supported by the horseshoe collar while a lifting line raises them clear of the water. This rescue sling sign identifies where the equipment is kept so crew can retrieve it without delay in an emergency.
As with other life-saving appliance markers on board, this rescue sling sign is fitted at the equipment’s stowage point and forms part of the vessel’s wider escape route and safety signage system. Its marine-grade construction is built to withstand constant exposure to salt spray, UV, and washdown, keeping the pictogram legible for the working life of the ship.
