The Turn Clockwise to Open sign shows the correct rotation direction for a watertight hatch dog, valve handle, or scuttle along an escape route, so crew can release it in one confident motion rather than fumbling with the wrong direction first. The curved arrow follows the exact motion needed, matching how the fitting is actually built to turn.
Watertight and weathertight closures are deliberately stiff to hold their seal, so getting the turn direction right the first time matters when every second counts. A turn clockwise to open sign fixed directly beside the handle removes any guesswork, which is especially valuable for crew unfamiliar with a particular vessel or for passengers assisting during a drill.
