IMO Liferaft Sign – ES0009
This liferaft sign marks the stowage location of an inflatable liferaft carried in a rigid canister, ready to be released and inflated in an abandon-ship situation. The pictogram’s closed canister riding on the water identifies the raft’s stowage point independently of any launch method, covering rafts that float free, are thrown over the side, or are released by a hydrostatic unit.
Liferafts are a core part of a vessel’s life-saving appliances, carried in sufficient number and capacity under SOLAS to accommodate everyone on board. Each stowage position is marked with this liferaft sign so crew can account for every raft during musters and drills, and so passengers unfamiliar with the ship can find the nearest one quickly in an emergency.
Because visibility during an emergency can never be guaranteed, this liferaft sign uses photoluminescent film that absorbs ambient light and continues glowing for hours afterward, keeping the raft’s stowage position identifiable through smoke, power loss, or a night-time abandonment.
