A no reaching in sign is an ISO 7010 prohibition pictogram fitted to machinery, conveyors, winches and cargo handling equipment aboard ships and in port facilities to warn against placing a hand or arm into a moving mechanism. Shown as a red circle with a diagonal bar over a black hand entering a gap or roller symbol on a white background, this no reaching in sign gives an instant warning that reaching into the equipment while it is running or capable of starting can result in serious entanglement or crush injury.

Entanglement and crush injuries around moving machinery remain a significant hazard in cargo handling, deck operations and engine room maintenance, and a no reaching in sign is a simple, low-cost control that reinforces safe behaviour at the exact point of highest risk. Aboard vessels, the sign is commonly fitted near mooring winches, anchor windlasses, conveyor systems, cargo cranes and rotating machinery in the engine room, where an unguarded gap or pinch point could otherwise tempt a crew member to reach in to clear a jam or retrieve a dropped item while the equipment is still live. In port terminals, the same no reaching in sign is used on baggage handling belts, sorting conveyors and packaging machinery to reinforce the same message for stevedores and maintenance staff.
A no reaching in sign is intended to work together with physical guarding, interlocks and lockout procedures rather than replace them, giving a clear visual reminder exactly where a person’s hand might otherwise stray. Because the pictogram follows ISO 7010 conventions, the sign communicates the same warning to every crew member and contractor regardless of language, which is especially important where machinery is operated by a rotating, multinational workforce.
Many entanglement incidents happen during short, informal interactions with machinery, such as clearing a minor jam or freeing a snagged line, rather than during planned maintenance when proper isolation is already in place. A no reaching in sign fitted at these everyday points of contact helps interrupt exactly this kind of shortcut, prompting a crew member to stop, isolate the equipment or call for assistance rather than reaching in while the machine could still move.
Safety Sign Hub manufactures this no reaching in sign from a fire-retardant, photoluminescent material designed to withstand vibration, oil, moisture and the general wear found around working machinery. The photoluminescent pigment charges under ambient light and glows during a blackout or power interruption, so the sign stays visible in low light exactly when machinery guarding might otherwise be harder to see. Ship chandlers and marine suppliers can order this sign using SKU PS0020 for fast, reliable procurement. For further guidance on machine guarding and safe operating procedures, see the Safe Work Australia resources on plant safety, and fit a no reaching in sign wherever moving parts present an entanglement or crush hazard.
Refresher training on machinery hazards tends to fade over time, particularly for tasks performed only occasionally, which is exactly when a no reaching in sign earns its keep as a permanent, always-present reminder. Fitting the sign at the specific pinch point rather than only in a general safety notice near the machinery entrance ensures the warning is seen at the moment a hand is actually about to move toward the hazard, rather than being read once during induction and then gradually forgotten during routine operation. Checking sign condition and placement during routine machinery inspections helps ensure the warning stays legible and correctly positioned as equipment is serviced, replaced or reconfigured over the life of the vessel.
