This 45 degree arrow sign is a directional escape route marker used alongside exit, ladder, and survival craft signs to show the exact heading a crew member or passenger must take to continue along the evacuation route. The diagonal arrow indicates a route that changes direction partway, such as up a stairwell or across to an adjoining passage, rather than continuing straight ahead or turning a full 90 degrees.
Escape route signage relies on a consistent visual language so it can be read instantly under stress, and this 45 degree arrow sign is one of the standard directional pictograms used to build that continuous chain of guidance from any point on the vessel to the nearest muster station or embarkation deck. Placed at junctions, stairwells, and changes in level, it removes any ambiguity about which way to turn next.
Like the rest of the escape route sign set, this 45 degree arrow sign is manufactured from photoluminescent film that charges under ambient lighting and continues glowing for hours in a blackout, keeping the directional chain intact even when main power and smoke obscure normal visibility.
