No Mobile Phones Sign for Hazardous and Sensitive Area Control
The No Mobile Phones Sign is an IMO prohibition sign used aboard ships and in port and terminal facilities to warn against mobile phone use in areas where it could create an ignition hazard, cause electromagnetic interference, or breach navigational and security procedures. Mobile phones and other personal electronic devices can act as an ignition source in flammable atmospheres, and their signals can interfere with sensitive navigation, communication, or control equipment.
When to Use This Sign
Install the No Mobile Phones Sign at the entrance to fuel handling areas, bunkering stations, paint stores, battery rooms, and other zones classified as hazardous due to flammable vapours or dust. It is equally applicable on the bridge, in radio rooms, and near sensitive navigation or communication equipment, where mobile phone signals could cause interference or where their use would distract crew from safety-critical duties.
Design and Materials
This sign is printed on self-adhesive film in your choice of material – non-glow vinyl, or DNV Wheelmark certified Class C / Class D photoluminescent film. It carries a long-duration afterglow, remaining visible in darkness or during a blackout after normal light exposure. The sign is waterproof and resistant to saltwater exposure, with a glossy, wipe-clean finish that withstands the marine environment and routine cleaning.
Installation and Use
The No Mobile Phones Sign uses a peel-and-stick self-adhesive backing, allowing installation directly onto doors, bulkheads, or entry points without tools or drilling. Clean and dry the mounting surface before application to ensure maximum adhesion in the marine environment. Position the sign at eye level at every entrance to a restricted zone so it is clearly visible to crew, contractors, and visitors before they enter.
Compliance and Standards
This sign complies with IMO Resolution A.1116(30) governing graphical symbols for shipboard safety signage, and follows ISO 24409-2 for ship design and construction life-saving and fire protection symbols, with further guidance on hazardous area electrical safety available from Safe Work Australia. These standards ensure the sign’s pictogram and wording are internationally recognised, supporting consistent hazard-area control practices across the maritime industry.
Fitting Into a Vessel’s Broader Signage Plan
A clearly marked no mobile phones sign works alongside other hazardous-area signage, such as No Smoking and No Naked Flames signs, to give crew, contractors, and visitors a consistent, easily understood warning system throughout zones where an ignition source or signal interference could have serious consequences. Port state control inspections and classification society surveys routinely check that hazardous-area signage such as this is present, legible, and correctly positioned at every relevant access point.
