This IMO fire control sign identifies the location of a fixed fire-extinguishing installation, shown as a bank of gas cylinders beside a flame in the pictogram. It marks the battery of extinguishing medium, typically CO2, connected by pipework to a protected space such as a machinery room, cargo hold, or paint locker, and is one of the most safety-critical signs on board because crew must find it instantly during a fire emergency.
The fixed fire-extinguishing installation sign is mounted at the entrance to the CO2 room or gas battery space, and again at the release control station where the system is actually triggered, which SOLAS requires to be located outside the protected space so it can be operated safely from a position unaffected by the fire itself. Both locations must carry this fixed fire-extinguishing installation sign so that any crew member, not just those on watch in that section, can locate the system without delay.
Because the fixed installation is the last line of defence for spaces that cannot be reached safely once alight, such as below-deck machinery spaces or enclosed cargo holds, this sign must remain unobstructed and clearly lit at all times. It should never be covered by stores, equipment, or temporary fittings placed near the battery room door during cargo operations or maintenance work.

During weekly and monthly fire safety rounds, crew confirm that this sign is present and legible at both the battery room and the release station, that the release station itself is unlocked or quick to access under the vessel’s own procedures, and that instructions for operating the system are posted alongside it. Any missing or obscured fixed fire-extinguishing installation sign at either location should be corrected immediately, since confusion in an emergency over which station releases which system can cost critical time.
This sign is specifically checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys and port state control inspections, where the surveyor confirms that fixed extinguishing systems are correctly marked at both the protected space and the release point, that alarms warning of impending release are working, and that crew can demonstrate the correct shutdown sequence for ventilation and fuel before activating the system. A vessel with clearly signed fixed installations demonstrates that its most serious fire-fighting equipment is genuinely ready to use, not just present on paper.
New crew and cadets are shown this sign and briefed on the fixed system’s operation during their onboard safety induction, since the fixed installation is only effective if it is triggered promptly and correctly, and every crew member needs to recognise this symbol regardless of their department. This sign is commonly ordered alongside other machinery space fire safety signs, such as the CO2 extinguisher sign used for portable units in the same spaces.
Because fixed extinguishing systems are sometimes relocated or upgraded during a refit, it is worth confirming this signage after any machinery space modification, so the battery room and release station remain correctly marked for the system actually installed rather than a previous configuration.
