This fire station sign marks a fire station point on board: a fixed location, usually a locker, recess, or dedicated bulkhead panel, where a set of fire-fighting equipment such as hoses, nozzles, spanners, and sometimes a portable extinguisher is kept together as a ready-to-use unit. The bold red “F” pictogram on a photoluminescent ground is one of the IMO fire control symbols, and this sign lets crew identify a fire station at a glance from anywhere along a passageway, even before they can read any accompanying equipment labels.
A fire station sign is fitted at fire equipment lockers and hose reel stations throughout accommodation decks, machinery spaces, and open deck areas, matching the fire station symbols shown on the vessel’s fire control plan. Because fire stations are spaced out at intervals along escape routes and working areas, this sign is often the first indicator a crew member sees when searching for the nearest fire-fighting equipment during an incident, well before reaching the locker door itself.
The sign is mounted directly above or beside the fire station locker or cabinet, at a height that stays visible above deck equipment, stores, or temporary cargo that might otherwise obstruct a lower-mounted sign. On open decks it is fixed to a bulkhead or dedicated post close to the hose reel or hydrant, positioned so it stays legible from the direction crew would normally approach in an emergency.
During fire rounds and drills, crew check that each fire station sign is still correctly positioned over its locker and that the equipment inside matches the fire control plan inventory for that station. Photoluminescent signs of this type need a clear charging light source, so a fire station sign mounted behind stored equipment, ducting, or scaffolding will not hold enough charge to stay visible in a blackout or smoke-filled passageway.
Vessels preparing for SOLAS fire safety surveys are typically asked to confirm that every fire station shown on the fire control plan is clearly marked and stocked to the listed inventory. Keeping spare fire station signs on hand alongside other fire-fighting signage makes it straightforward to replace a faded or damaged sign, or to mark a newly added station, before the next survey.
Because the “F” symbol is used consistently across the fleet for any fire station regardless of what specific equipment it holds, this sign works alongside more specific fire-fighting signage, such as our fire extinguisher sign, to give crew both the general location and the specific equipment type at a glance.
A fire station’s exact contents can vary by class society and vessel type, but typically include a length of fire hose on a reel or rack, a dual-purpose nozzle, a hose spanner, and sometimes a fire axe or crowbar for forcing entry. Some stations also house a portable extinguisher matched to the fire risk of the surrounding space. Because the fire station sign only marks the location and not the specific inventory, crew still rely on the fire control plan to confirm exactly what a given station should contain, with this sign making the physical search for that station immediate rather than a matter of memory.
