This IMO fire control sign identifies the location of a fixed fire hose reel, shown in the pictogram as a spiral-coiled hose beside rising flames. The fire hose reel sign marks a fire hose that is permanently wound onto a wall-mounted or pedestal-mounted reel and connected to the ship’s fire main, ready to be unwound and used the moment it is needed, distinct from a loosely coiled hose stored in a rack or cabinet.
Fire hose reels are fitted at fixed points throughout accommodation spaces, machinery spaces, and open decks, positioned so their combined coverage reaches every part of the vessel without gaps. This fire hose reel sign is fixed directly above or beside each reel unit, so crew responding to an alarm can identify the nearest fixed reel station at a glance, without needing to search for a separate hose and coupling.
Because a hose reel must swing and unwind freely to reach the full length of hose across its coverage area, the space around the reel needs to remain clear of stored equipment, furniture, or cargo that could restrict its arc of movement. This fire hose reel sign helps confirm the reel has not been boxed in or obstructed since its last inspection, which matters most in corridors and machinery spaces where the reel’s swing radius can easily be encroached upon.

During weekly and monthly fire equipment inspections, crew confirm that the reel turns freely, that the hose unwinds without kinking or binding, that the shut-off valve at the reel operates correctly, and that this sign remains legible at the mounting point. A reel found seized, with a perished or kinked hose, or with a leaking valve should be reported and corrected immediately, since a fixed reel is designed to be the fastest possible response to a developing fire in its zone.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys, where the surveyor confirms that fire hose reels are correctly sited to give full coverage of their assigned zones, fitted with hose of the required length and diameter, correctly signed, and demonstrably operable under a pressure test. A vessel with well-maintained, clearly signed hose reels shows that its fixed fire-fighting water supply can be brought to bear on a fire within moments of it starting.
New crew are shown this sign during fire safety inductions, since operating a fixed hose reel means understanding how to release the reel’s locking mechanism, unwind sufficient hose to reach the fire, and open the shut-off valve without being caught off guard by the reaction force of the jet. This sign is commonly ordered alongside other core fire-fighting equipment signage, such as the fire hose and nozzle sign used for hose stations stored in cabinets rather than on fixed reels.
Because a fixed reel keeps its hose permanently connected and ready, it is often the equipment crew reach for first in a fire drill, which makes keeping every reel’s sign visible and its swing area clear a meaningful contributor to a vessel’s overall drill response time.
Fixed hose reels are periodically pressure-tested and checked for smooth rotation under load, a test that should be logged alongside the vessel’s other active fire-fighting equipment records. A reel that binds or fails to reach full extension under test is one of the more common findings during external fire safety audits, so this fire hose reel sign is also a useful prompt for crew to confirm the test schedule for each reel station is current.
