This fire control plan sign marks the location on board where the vessel’s fire control plan is posted, using the standard wording “FIRE PLAN” on a photoluminescent background so the location is recognisable to crew, port state control officers, and shore-based firefighters at a glance. The plan itself sets out the layout of fire zones, the location of fire doors, extinguishing appliances, fire pumps, and ventilation systems, so marking exactly where it is kept is one of the most basic pieces of fire safety signage on any SOLAS vessel.
Every vessel subject to SOLAS is required to carry a fire control plan permanently exhibited for the guidance of the ship’s officers, and a duplicate set is stored in a prominently marked weathertight enclosure outside the deckhouse for the assistance of shore-side firefighting personnel. This sign is fixed at both locations, at the bridge or muster station copy and at the external weathertight cylinder, so anyone searching for it during an emergency can find it immediately rather than wasting time checking multiple compartments.
This sign is typically mounted directly above or beside the display case or cabinet holding the folded plan, at the entrance to the bridge, or on the external bulkhead near the accommodation block where the duplicate weathertight copy is stored. Shore firefighters boarding an unfamiliar vessel during an emergency rely on this marker to locate the plan within seconds of arriving, before they have any other information about the layout of the ship.

Emergency response depends on accurate, current knowledge of a vessel’s fire zones, means of escape, and firefighting equipment, and the fire control plan is the single document that consolidates all of this information into one reference. Without a clearly marked location, crew and outside responders alike can lose critical time during the opening minutes of a fire, when knowing which fire doors to close and which zone to isolate matters most.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys and port state control inspections, where the surveyor confirms the plan is present, current, permanently exhibited, and clearly marked at both the internal and external locations required by the regulations. A missing or unmarked fire control plan sign is a common finding during these inspections, since the plan itself can be present but simply not signposted clearly enough to be found quickly.
New crew should be shown the exact location of the fire control plan during safety familiarisation, since referring to it is often one of the first actions taken by the officer in charge when a fire alarm sounds. Clear, consistent labelling like this fire control plan sign means crew do not need to search or ask where the plan is kept during an actual emergency.
Consistent signage also matters during a routine walk-through inspection, since an unmarked plan location can slow down an auditor trying to confirm it is properly exhibited as required. Fitting this fire control plan sign at both the bridge copy and the external weathertight enclosure keeps the vessel’s documentation easy to verify against what SOLAS requires.
The plan itself should be reviewed and updated whenever the vessel’s fire safety arrangements change, and marking its location clearly also makes it easier for the officer responsible for maintaining it to locate and update every copy on board without needing to search the vessel.
