This fire blanket instruction sign shows the fire blanket pictogram, a figure pulling a blanket over a flame, above a printed panel of usage instructions. The panel states that the blanket is for smothering fire and is suitable for chip pan or deep fat fires, waste bin fires, or for wrapping around someone whose clothes are burning.
Unlike the plain fire blanket sign, which uses the pictogram alone to mark the storage location of a fire blanket, this fire blanket instruction sign spells out exactly when and how the blanket should be used. That makes it especially useful in galleys and mess areas, where a fire blanket is most likely to be needed for a chip pan, deep fat fryer, or waste bin fire, and where crew or catering staff may not have had recent fire training.
This sign is fixed directly to or above the wall-mounted case holding the fire blanket, typically in galleys, pantries, and other catering spaces, though a fire blanket can also be kept in accommodation areas for smothering a person’s burning clothing. Because a fire blanket works by cutting off the fire’s oxygen supply rather than by cooling or chemical suppression, it is effective on small fires that other extinguishing agents can make worse, such as a chip pan fire that a jet of water could cause to flare up dangerously.

On vessels where a fire blanket sits alongside portable extinguishers, this fire blanket instruction sign lets crew and catering staff confirm at a glance that the blanket is the right first response for a contained cooking fire, rather than reaching for an extinguisher that may not be suitable or may make the fire worse. This matters most in the first seconds of a fire, when using the wrong method wastes time and can make the situation worse.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys, where the surveyor confirms that fire blankets are correctly identified and that instructions for their use are clear and legible. Correct identification and instruction signage is a standard item reviewed during these inspections, since crew and catering staff safety in an emergency depends on knowing what the blanket is for without hesitation.
New crew and catering staff joining a vessel should be shown the location of fire blankets and talked through this sign’s instructions during galley familiarisation, since a chip pan or deep fat fire can develop very quickly and there is no time to read detailed instructions once a fire has started. This sign is commonly found alongside other firefighting equipment identification signage such as the wet chemical extinguisher ID sign, so a galley’s full range of firefighting equipment is clearly and consistently distinguished.
Because a fire blanket is only effective if crew know what it is for and how to use it, this fire blanket instruction sign should be checked at the same time as the blanket itself, keeping it accurate and legible as importantly as keeping the blanket clean, undamaged, and ready for immediate use.
