This ‘A’ watertight sliding fire door sign, marked “WT”, identifies a sliding fire door within an ‘A’ class fire division that carries a full watertight rating. Unlike a hinged door, this fire door runs on a track and must be closed by the crew or a remote control system to restore both the fire division and the watertight boundary.
A watertight sliding fire door left open or chocked on its track loses its protective value the moment it is defeated – both fire integrity and the watertight seal are compromised. This sign reminds crew and passengers to keep the track and door leaf clear and to close the door fully after passing through.
Watertight sliding fire doors of this type are commonly fitted at main watertight subdivision boundaries within machinery spaces and engine room casings, where a hinged door is impractical and a sliding mechanism is used instead. This watertight sliding fire door sign is mounted directly on or beside the door leaf so it is seen every time the opening is passed through.
Fire and watertight door classifications follow SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the SOLAS watertight subdivision requirements, which set the fire-resistance rating and watertight standard for doors fitted within ‘A’ class divisions. Surveyors checking every watertight sliding fire door and its signage during inspections expect clear, photoluminescent identification at each opening.
Installing this watertight sliding fire door sign is straightforward: the peel-and-stick backing adheres directly to the door leaf, frame, or adjacent bulkhead, and the photoluminescent film charges under normal lighting so the pictogram remains visible if power and lighting are lost.
