IMO Escape Ladder Sign – ES0003
This escape ladder sign marks a fixed vertical or angled ladder used as part of an internal escape route, typically connecting decks or leading up through a trunk or hatch when a stairwell is not available. The simple ladder pictogram, without any water reference, distinguishes it from embarkation ladders used for boarding survival craft, keeping the two sign types visually distinct along the escape route.
Escape ladders are common in machinery spaces, engine rooms, and other confined areas of a vessel where a full stairwell would take up too much space. This escape ladder sign is placed at the base or top of the ladder so crew moving through unfamiliar or smoke-filled areas can immediately identify it as part of the designated escape route rather than routine access equipment.
As with the rest of the vessel’s escape route signage, this escape ladder sign is manufactured from photoluminescent film that charges under normal lighting and continues glowing for hours during a blackout, keeping the ladder’s position visible when conventional lighting fails.
