This IMO fire control sign identifies the location of a water fog applicator, shown in the pictogram as a nozzle producing a fine spray onto a flame rather than a solid jet. The water fog applicator sign marks equipment used to apply a fine water mist to fires where a direct jet would spread burning liquid or cause a dangerous steam reaction, making it a distinct piece of equipment from a standard fire hose nozzle.
Water fog applicators are stationed in galleys, engine rooms, and other spaces where a fine spray is the safer response to a fire involving hot fat, oil, or electrical equipment, since a fog pattern cools and smothers without scattering burning liquid the way a jet nozzle can. This water fog applicator sign is fixed directly above or beside the applicator’s mounting bracket, so crew reach for the correct nozzle type rather than a standard hose branch when seconds matter.
Because a fog applicator is only effective when connected to the correct hose and pressure setting, its mounting position needs to stay near a suitable water supply connection, and this water fog applicator sign helps confirm the unit remains at its designated station. The applicator and its signage must stay clearly visible and unobstructed by galley equipment, stores, or machinery placed nearby during normal operations.

During weekly and monthly fire equipment inspections, crew confirm that the fog applicator nozzle is undamaged, that it connects correctly to the vessel’s fire hoses, and that this sign remains legible at the mounting point. Any unit found missing, damaged, or relocated should be corrected immediately, since choosing the wrong nozzle type during a galley or electrical fire can make the situation considerably worse.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys, where the surveyor confirms that fog-producing equipment is provided in spaces where it is required, correctly signed, and that crew can demonstrate selecting the right nozzle for a given fire type under drill conditions. A vessel with correctly signed fire-fighting equipment for every fire class shows that its crew training extends beyond simply having extinguishers on board.
New crew and galley staff are shown this sign and the water fog applicator itself during their safety inductions, since recognising when a fine spray is required rather than a jet, particularly for fat fires and energised electrical equipment, is a distinction that can prevent a manageable fire from becoming a serious incident. This sign is commonly ordered alongside other galley and machinery space fire safety signs, such as the CO2 extinguisher sign used for electrical fires in the same spaces.
Because fog applicator stations are sometimes relocated during galley refits or machinery upgrades, it is worth confirming this signage after any layout change, so the mounting bracket and its water connection always match where the sign says they should be.
