The SOPEP Symbol Sign is a compact, text-free pictogram sign showing the internationally recognised oil-drop-in-circle symbol used to mark Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP) locker and equipment points. Its simple, high-contrast photoluminescent design communicates instantly across languages and crew nationalities, making it ideal for quick-glance identification in machinery spaces, bunker stations, and deck lockers.
Unlike wordier signage, this symbol-only design relies on the same graphical logic as ISO 7010 pictograms: a single, unambiguous icon that crew, contractors, and visiting surveyors can recognise at a glance regardless of first language. The oil-drop icon has become the de facto shorthand across the maritime industry for anything related to oil spill containment and response, appearing on SOPEP lockers, absorbent pad stores, spill kit cabinets, and bunkering station equipment boxes fleet-wide.
MARPOL Annex I requires every oil tanker of 150 gross tonnage and above, and every other ship of 400 gross tonnage and above, to carry an approved Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan. The plan sets out the equipment, procedures, and reporting steps to be followed in the event of an oil spill, and effective execution depends on crew being able to locate spill-response equipment immediately under pressure. A clear symbol at each SOPEP equipment point removes any delay caused by searching for or misreading text-based labels, which matters most in the first critical minutes of a spill response.
Port State Control and classification society surveys routinely check that SOPEP equipment lockers are clearly marked and readily accessible, and a recognisable pictogram sign is a simple, durable way to demonstrate this during an inspection. Because the icon is symbol-only, it also works well as a wayfinding marker directing crew from a distance toward the nearest SOPEP point before they are close enough to read accompanying text signage.
Vessel operators managing multiple ships often standardise on symbol-only signage precisely because it removes translation and phrasing inconsistencies between yards, refit contractors, and different sign suppliers used over a ship’s lifetime. A single, consistent pictogram applied fleet-wide means a crew member transferring between vessels recognises the SOPEP marking instantly, without needing to relearn slightly different wording from ship to ship. This consistency also simplifies training material and induction checklists, since new crew can be shown one universal image rather than a variety of text-based labels.
This sign is best used as a directional or locator marker — mounted at alleyway junctions, on bulkheads leading toward the main SOPEP locker, or directly on cabinet doors and deck boxes that store absorbent booms, pads, and dispersant. Fitting it at multiple points along the route to the SOPEP locker, not just on the locker itself, helps crew and visitors orient quickly during drills and genuine incidents alike, which supports the ISM Code’s expectation of practiced, effective emergency response procedures.

Manufactured from fire-retardant, photoluminescent material to marine specification, the SOPEP Symbol Sign remains legible in low-light engine rooms and during night-time bunkering operations, and stands up to the humid, oily conditions typical of the spaces it marks. It is a practical, low-cost complement to our full-text SOPEP Sign and the wider Mandatory Signs range, giving vessels flexibility to use text-based or symbol-only marking depending on the space and audience.
