The SOPEP sign marks locations aboard ship connected to the vessel’s Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan, using a simple oil-drop pictogram inside a circle to identify SOPEP lockers, emergency response equipment stowage, and oil-spill response stations. Every ship of 400 gross tonnage and above is required under MARPOL Annex I to carry an approved SOPEP, and clear, consistent signage marking where the plan’s associated equipment and documentation are kept is an essential part of making that plan usable in a genuine emergency rather than a document that sits unread in a drawer.

Although the SOPEP sign itself marks an emergency plan and equipment location rather than personal protective equipment directly, PPE is central to the plan it represents: crew responding to an oil spill are required to don appropriate protective clothing, gloves, eye protection, and in some cases respiratory protection before handling spilled oil, absorbent materials, or dispersant chemicals. A well-marked SOPEP locker should always include the PPE needed for a safe, effective response, and the sign’s job is to ensure that equipment and documentation is instantly locatable under the time pressure of a real spill, when searching for the right locker is the last thing a crew should be doing.
This sign is typically posted directly on or above SOPEP lockers, oil spill response equipment stowage, and at muster points referenced within the plan itself, giving crew an immediate, unambiguous visual cue during drills and genuine incidents alike. Because a SOPEP response must begin within minutes of a spill being detected to have any chance of containing it before it spreads, every second spent searching for equipment or documentation directly increases the environmental and regulatory consequences of the incident.
Manufactured with a photoluminescent base that remains visible during a power failure or in poor lighting conditions typical of engine rooms and deck lockers, this sign supports the ISM Code’s requirement for clear emergency signage and complements the vessel’s SOPEP training and drill programme. Its simple, internationally recognisable pictogram communicates its meaning without relying on text, which is valuable given how many nationalities can be represented aboard a single vessel’s crew.
Fitting a SOPEP sign at every relevant locker and response station is a straightforward, low-cost way to keep a MARPOL Annex I compliance obligation genuinely operational rather than theoretical, and is exactly the kind of consistent, visible signage that Port State Control officers and SOPEP drill assessors check for during inspections and audits, alongside related pollution-prevention signage in our Mandatory Signs category.
Safety Sign Hub supplies IMO-compliant signage engineered for the marine and offshore environment, backed by full IMPA and ISSA cross-referencing so procurement teams and superintendents can specify with confidence. Every SOPEP sign we supply meets the visual and durability standards expected under SOLAS and MARPOL-driven safety management practice. See the full regulatory framework behind shipboard safety and pollution-prevention signage at the IMO SOLAS convention.
Vessel operators preparing for a MARPOL Annex I compliance audit or an ISM internal review should confirm that a clearly legible SOPEP sign marks every relevant locker and response point, replacing any faded or damaged sign immediately given how directly this signage supports the ship’s ability to respond effectively to an oil pollution incident.
Ship’s officers responsible for pollution prevention should include a SOPEP sign check as a standing item on the vessel’s monthly safety inspection rounds, confirming that every locker location referenced in the written plan still carries a legible sign and that the equipment behind it matches the inventory listed in the SOPEP documentation, since a mismatch between the plan and the reality at the locker is exactly the kind of gap a Port State Control inspection is designed to catch.
