The Solvents Warning Sign (HS0057) is the standard ISO 7010 pictogram for Solvents, shown in the standard black-on-yellow hazard warning format. It tells crew, contractors and visitors that solvents, flammable and often toxic liquids used for cleaning, thinning and paint work, are stored or handled nearby and that precautions apply before entering the area. This pictogram communicates that risk instantly, without depending on any one language, aboard a multinational crew.
Within Safety Sign Hub’s Hazard Signs range, HS0057 covers the specific risk of solvents, distinct from our general flammable-liquid or harmful-material signage. Shipboard, this solvents warning sign is typically fitted at paint lockers, workshop chemical stores, engine room cleaning cabinets, tank cleaning stations and maintenance bays where thinners and degreasers are decanted or applied. It suits shore-based marine workshops and dry docks too, wherever consistent hazard signage is needed across a fleet or facility, helping ensure that anyone moving between vessels recognises the same pictogram regardless of which ship or yard they are working in.
Every sign in our Hazard Signs range, including HS0057, is available on rigid marine-grade panel or durable self-adhesive vinyl, with a photoluminescent option for low-light spaces. Each is built to resist salt air, humidity and UV, so the sign stays legible and firmly mounted through years of shipboard washdown and weathering.
Solvents carry a compounding risk: many are highly flammable, some give off vapours that can displace breathable air or cause narcosis in confined spaces, and repeated skin or respiratory exposure can lead to burns, dermatitis or longer-term harm. Aboard a vessel, where ventilation is limited and ignition sources such as welding, hot work and electrical equipment are common, an unmarked solvent store is a real hazard rather than a housekeeping detail. Without clear signage, a new crew member, contractor or visitor may not recognise that stored containers or cleaning stations carry fire, inhalation or contact risk. These are not abstract risks: solvent fires and vapour exposure incidents remain a recurring theme in shipboard incident reports, which is exactly why consistent marking matters.
Posting the sign also supports the vessel’s safety management system, giving officers and safety committees a fixed reference point during safety rounds and audits as crew and cargo change over time.
HS0057 reproduces a registered ISO 7010 graphical symbol, the internationally recognised standard for safety signs referenced throughout IMO shipboard safety guidance. Using registered ISO 7010 pictograms rather than improvised warnings supports the general safety obligations set out under SOLAS and is generally what Port State Control officers and classification society surveyors expect to see during hazard-area inspections. Full technical detail on the ISO 7010 symbol library is available directly from the standards body at iso.org.
Mount the solvents warning sign at eye level on the door or bulkhead outside any space where solvents are stored or used, and repeat it inside chemical lockers above the relevant shelf. On open workshop floors, position it directly above the workbench or cleaning station rather than on a general noticeboard. Where a space also needs PPE or no-smoking signage, group this sign with those signs rather than relying on it alone.
Fit HS0057 wherever solvents are stored or used aboard your vessel to keep hazard marking consistent and inspection-ready. Browse the full Hazard Signs range or check Fire Fighting Signs for related signage.
