This safety plan sign shows the standard IMO fire control symbol marking the location on board where the vessel’s safety plan is posted, a circle bisected by a horizontal line with a solid triangle pointing outward, produced to IMO Resolution A.654(16) fire control symbol specifications so the location is recognisable to crew and inspectors regardless of language. The safety plan itself is the companion document to the fire control plan, setting out the location of life-saving appliances such as lifeboats, life rafts, and lifejacket stowage, along with the vessel’s designated means of escape.
Every vessel subject to SOLAS is required to display a safety plan showing the arrangement of life-saving appliances and escape routes, kept alongside or near the fire control plan for quick reference during an emergency. This sign is fixed directly above or beside the display case or cabinet holding the safety plan, typically at the bridge, at a muster station, or near the accommodation stairwell, so crew and passengers know exactly where to find it without searching.
Knowing the location of life-saving appliances and the fastest route to reach them matters most in the first minutes of any shipboard emergency, whether the vessel is dealing with a fire, flooding, or an abandon ship situation. This safety plan sign gives crew and passengers a single, consistent reference point across every vessel in a fleet, so time is not lost searching for a plan that may be labelled differently from ship to ship.
Passengers and new crew are often unfamiliar with a vessel’s exact layout, and the the plan is one of the few documents that lays out escape routes and life-saving equipment locations in one place. A clearly marked the plan location means this reference is easy to find during a drill or an actual emergency, rather than only being consulted after crew have already searched multiple compartments.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys and passenger ship inspections, where the surveyor confirms the the plan is present, current, and clearly marked at its display location. A missing or unmarked the plan sign is a common finding during these inspections, since the plan can be correctly posted but not signposted clearly enough to be located quickly by an inspector or an unfamiliar crew member.
New crew and passengers should be shown the location of the safety plan during safety familiarisation and muster drills, since referring to the plan for the nearest life-saving appliance and escape route is one of the first things anyone should do when an alarm sounds. Clear, consistent labelling like this safety plan sign removes the need to search or ask where the plan is kept.
Consistent signage also matters during a routine walk-through inspection, since an unmarked plan location can slow down an auditor confirming the safety plan is properly exhibited alongside the fire control plan as required. Fitting this safety plan sign at the correct location keeps the vessel’s documentation easy to verify against what SOLAS requires.
The safety plan should be reviewed and updated whenever life-saving appliances or escape routes change, and marking its location clearly also makes it easier for the officer responsible for maintaining it to locate and update the plan without needing to search the vessel.
