No Sitting Sign

A no sitting sign is an ISO 7010 prohibition pictogram used aboard ships and within port facilities to warn that a particular surface, ledge, rail or piece of equipment must not be sat on. Displayed as a red circle with a diagonal bar over a black seated figure symbol on a white background, this no sitting sign gives crew, contractors and visitors an instant, unambiguous message that stopping to sit in that location carries a real safety risk that is not always obvious at a glance.

No sitting sign PS0022 - ISO 7010 prohibition sign for marine use

Aboard vessels, a no sitting sign is commonly fitted near guard rails, bulwarks, hatch coamings and mooring equipment, since sitting on these surfaces can place a person dangerously close to an open edge, overboard drop or a fitting that is not rated to bear a person’s full weight. A moment spent sitting on a rail to take a break or a photograph can quickly turn into a man-overboard emergency if the rail gives way or the vessel moves unexpectedly, so a no sitting sign at these locations is a simple reminder that reduces a genuinely serious risk. In port facilities, the same sign is used on stacked cargo, conveyor structures and lightweight barriers where the surface is not designed to carry a person’s weight and could collapse or shift underfoot.

Addressing a risk that looks harmless

Unlike hazards that are visually obvious, the risk behind a no sitting sign is often underestimated because sitting feels like a low-risk, everyday action. That is exactly why a clear, standardised sign is valuable: it flags a location-specific hazard that might otherwise be missed by someone unfamiliar with the vessel or facility, including new crew, contractors and visiting surveyors. Because the pictogram follows ISO 7010 conventions, the sign communicates this warning without relying on any particular language.

New crew members and short-term contractors are often the ones most likely to sit somewhere out of habit rather than local knowledge, since they have not yet learned which rails, ledges and hatch covers are safe for informal use on a particular vessel. A no sitting sign at the specific locations where the risk is real gives this group the same information that experienced crew have picked up over time, without relying on word of mouth or an induction briefing that may be quickly forgotten.

Durable, photoluminescent construction

Safety Sign Hub manufactures this no sitting sign from a fire-retardant, photoluminescent material built to withstand salt air, UV exposure and constant handling in the marine environment. The photoluminescent pigment charges under ambient light and continues glowing during a blackout or power failure, so the sign remains visible in exactly the low-light conditions where an unauthorised rest on a rail or ledge might otherwise go unnoticed. Ship chandlers and marine suppliers can order this sign using SKU PS0022 for fast, accurate procurement. For background on how such pictogram-based signs are designed and standardised, see the ISO 7010 standard, and fit a no sitting sign wherever a surface on board is not intended to bear a person’s weight.

A short walk-around focused specifically on informal seating spots, rails used for a quick break, and equipment casings that double as a convenient perch, often reveals several locations that would benefit from a no sitting sign but have never been formally assessed for this particular risk. Addressing these locations proactively, rather than after a near miss or a fall is reported, is a low-cost way to close a gap that general fall-from-height signage elsewhere on the vessel may not fully cover. Repeating this review each survey cycle keeps pace with new fittings, temporary equipment and reconfigured deck layouts that can quietly introduce fresh informal seating spots over time.
