This Low Temperature Hazard sign warns crew and visitors that a compartment, surface or piece of equipment is cold enough to cause frostbite, cold burns or cold stress on contact. It follows the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format, showing a snowflake on the standard photoluminescent yellow triangle so the hazard reads instantly regardless of the reader’s first language.
As SKU HS0015 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits reefer holds, cold storage rooms, cryogenic gas lines, LNG plant areas and any compartment where a low temperature hazard is present.
The pictogram shows a six-pointed snowflake rendered in black inside the warning triangle, a graphic used consistently across refrigerated cargo, cryogenic handling and cold storage environments to flag extreme cold without relying on text.
Because a low temperature hazard is not always obvious from the outside of an insulated door or pipe run, the sign gives crew and contractors an immediate cue to use appropriate PPE such as insulated gloves before making contact with a cold surface or entering a chilled compartment, particularly during the first few minutes when the temperature difference against a warm engine room or accommodation space is easy to underestimate. The photoluminescent base keeps the low temperature hazard warning visible for a period after lighting fails, useful in reefer holds and cold stores where lighting circuits are sometimes isolated separately from main compartments.
Contact with a surface, pipe or cargo affected by a low temperature hazard can cause cold burns or frostbite within seconds, and prolonged exposure inside a chilled compartment carries its own risk of cold stress and reduced dexterity.
Standardised signage at reefer holds, cryogenic lines and cold stores ensures crew reach for insulated gloves and appropriate clothing before contact rather than after an injury, and it supports the vessel’s cold work and confined space entry procedures. It also warns visiting surveyors, cargo surveyors and contractors who may not routinely work around refrigerated cargo of the low temperature hazard before they touch equipment or enter a chilled space.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set used to flag extreme cold hazards across refrigerated cargo and cryogenic gas handling, supporting the ISM Code’s requirement for documented hazard control in reefer and cold storage operations. A clearly displayed low temperature hazard warning at reefer hold entrances, cold store doors and cryogenic pipework is a control that classification surveyors and Port State Control officers look for when reviewing refrigerated cargo safety arrangements.
Mount the sign at eye level on reefer hold doors, cold store entrances and cryogenic pipe runs, positioned so it is seen before the door is opened or the pipework is touched. Use the pre-drilled fixing holes with marine-grade fasteners for exterior and heavily condensing surfaces, and the self-adhesive backing for interior cold store doors and equipment housings, checking that the adhesive is rated for the low surface temperature involved.
Inspect the sign periodically for condensation or ice build-up that could obscure the low temperature hazard pictogram, wiping it clear during routine reefer checks rather than waiting for a scheduled maintenance period.
