This Hot Surface sign warns crew and contractors that a pipe, casing, exhaust or other fitting nearby is hot enough to cause a burn on contact. It follows the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format, showing heat waves rising from a horizontal bar on the standard photoluminescent yellow triangle so the hot surface hazard reads instantly regardless of the reader’s first language.
As SKU HS0019 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits exhaust manifolds, steam lines, boiler casings, engine room pipework and any equipment that runs hot during normal operation.
The pictogram shows three wavy heat lines rising from a flat black bar inside the warning triangle, a graphic recognised across shipping and industry to flag burn hazards without needing a temperature reading or text explanation.
Because a hot surface often looks identical to a cold one until touched, the sign has to register before a hand reaches out for support or balance in a machinery space, which is exactly the moment a burn injury typically occurs. The photoluminescent base keeps this warning visible for a period after lighting fails, useful in engine rooms and boiler spaces where equipment stays hot well after a power interruption.
Contact burns from an unmarked hot surface are a common and entirely preventable injury in engine rooms and machinery spaces, particularly for crew moving quickly during rounds or reaching for a handhold near unfamiliar equipment.
Standardised hot surface signage gives an instant visual cue to keep bare skin away from exhaust lines, steam pipes and casings, and it supports the vessel’s burn prevention procedures during both routine watchkeeping and maintenance work. It also protects visiting contractors and new crew who have not yet learned which pipework in a given space runs hot during normal operation.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set used to flag thermal hazards across the maritime and industrial sectors, supporting the ISM Code’s requirement for documented control of machinery space hazards. A visible hot surface warning on exhaust manifolds, steam lines and boiler casings is a documented control that classification surveyors and internal safety auditors look for when reviewing a vessel’s engine room safety arrangements.
Mount the sign directly on or immediately beside the hot surface itself, using a fixing method rated for the operating temperature involved, since standard adhesive can fail on surfaces that run consistently hot.
Use the pre-drilled fixing holes with high-temperature marine-grade fasteners for exhaust and steam applications, and confirm any self-adhesive product is rated for the expected surface temperature before fitting it to casings or pipework. Check the hot surface sign periodically for heat-related fading or lifting, since a degraded warning on a genuinely hot surface is a hazard in its own right.
