This Harmful Irritant Material sign warns crew and visitors that a substance capable of causing skin, eye or respiratory irritation is stored or handled in the marked area, without necessarily posing the more severe risk covered by a corrosive material sign.
It follows the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format, using the standard photoluminescent yellow triangle with a black cross so the harmful irritant material warning reads instantly to any crew member, contractor or visitor regardless of language. As SKU HS0016 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits paint stores, cleaning chemical lockers, laboratory spaces and general chemical storage areas.
The pictogram shows a simple black cross inside the black-bordered warning triangle on a fluorescent yellow ground, the standardised graphic used to flag substances that are harmful or irritant without needing text to explain the distinction from more severe chemical hazards.
Because a harmful irritant material may not announce itself with an obvious smell or visible residue, the sign functions as the primary cue for crew to use gloves, eye protection or ventilation before handling stored chemicals. The photoluminescent base keeps the harmful irritant material warning visible for a period after lighting fails, which matters in enclosed paint stores and chemical lockers with limited natural light.
Repeated or careless exposure to a harmful irritant material can cause skin sensitisation, eye irritation or respiratory discomfort that builds up over time rather than causing an obvious single incident, which makes consistent signage especially important for long-serving crew who might otherwise become complacent.
Clear harmful irritant material warnings at chemical stores and cleaning cabinets support the vessel’s chemical handling procedures and PPE requirements, and they give visiting contractors an immediate cue that a substance requires more care than its everyday appearance might suggest. It also reduces the chance that irritant products get treated the same as harmless consumables during routine stores handling.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set, supporting the chemical hazard communication expectations of the ISM Code and general good practice for handling substances covered under safety data sheets aboard vessels. A visible harmful irritant material warning at chemical stores and cleaning lockers is a documented control that internal auditors and Port State Control officers look for when reviewing a vessel’s chemical safety management.
Mount the sign directly on or beside the door or cabinet housing the harmful irritant material, at eye level so it is seen before the container is opened. Use the pre-drilled fixing holes with marine-grade fasteners for exterior or high-vibration storage locations, and the self-adhesive backing for interior cabinets and lockers where a permanent fixture is not required. Check the sign periodically to confirm it remains legible and has not been obscured by relocated stores or equipment, particularly after a stores delivery or a reorganisation of shelving in a shared chemical locker.
