IMO Fire Protection Door Sign – FS0024

This fire protection door sign shows a door closing against flames, the standard pictogram warning that a door is a fire-resisting boundary and must be kept shut to stop fire and smoke spreading between compartments. Unlike the abstract triangle plan symbols used on fire control plans, this fire protection door sign is a full pictogram intended for mounting directly on or beside the door itself, so crew and passengers immediately understand its purpose at a glance.

A fire protection door that is wedged, tied, or propped open loses its ability to contain fire and smoke, potentially allowing a fire to spread far beyond the compartment where it started. This fire protection door sign is a constant visual reminder that the door must remain closed except when someone is actually passing through it, and never left open for convenience.

Where this fire protection door sign is used

This fire protection door sign is fitted on fire-resisting doors throughout a vessel’s accommodation, machinery spaces, and service areas wherever a door forms part of the fire division between compartments. It is equally relevant on both ‘A’ class and ‘B’ class fire doors, since the “keep shut” principle applies regardless of the specific fire-resistance rating of the door.

Installing this fire protection door sign is straightforward: clean the door surface and apply using the sign’s adhesive backing or fixings, positioning it at eye level on or beside the door where anyone approaching will see it clearly. Crew training and fire drills should reinforce the message on this fire protection door sign, ensuring everyone on board understands why these doors must never be propped open.

Regulatory context

Fire door integrity and the requirement to keep fire doors closed are set out in SOLAS Chapter II-2, which governs the fire protection arrangements of ‘A’ and ‘B’ class divisions. Surveyors conducting fire safety inspections routinely check that fire protection door signs are fitted, legible, and that the doors themselves are not held open by unauthorised means.

Maintaining clear fire protection door signage across a vessel supports compliance with SOLAS fire safety requirements and helps ensure that, in the event of a real fire, compartmentation performs as designed and the spread of fire and smoke is contained.
