The HS0059 battery acid hazard sign warns crew and shore personnel of the corrosive risk posed by sulfuric acid electrolyte stored or handled in battery rooms, lockers, and charging stations aboard ship. It uses the standard ISO 7010 pictogram for Battery Acid, a black hazard symbol set on a yellow warning triangle, instantly readable regardless of a crew member’s first language. The sign is intended for anyone who enters a compartment where lead-acid batteries are stored, topped up, or exchanged, from engine ratings to contractors carrying out routine maintenance.
Within Safety Sign Hub’s Hazard Signs range, this battery acid hazard sign sits alongside other electrical and chemical warning pictograms used throughout a vessel’s engine room, emergency generator space, and battery locker. Typical shipboard locations include the entrance to dedicated battery rooms, above battery racks in lifeboat launching stations, near emergency battery banks for radio and navigation equipment, and at battery charging bays for portable equipment. Fitting a sign at each of these points ensures the hazard is flagged before a door is opened or a casing is disturbed.
Like the rest of the Hazard Signs range, HS0059 is produced on rigid, marine-grade material with a photoluminescent or self-adhesive finish depending on the mounting surface, and is resistant to saltwater spray, UV exposure, and the humidity typical of engine spaces and battery compartments. This construction keeps the pictogram legible for years without fading, cracking, or corroding in the same environment it is warning against.
Battery acid is a strong corrosive electrolyte that can cause severe skin and eye burns on contact, and its fumes can be harmful if inhaled in a poorly ventilated space. Batteries for emergency lighting, communications, and engine starting are found throughout a ship, often in confined compartments where an unwarned crew member could be caught unaware by a leaking cell or ruptured casing. A missing or faded battery acid hazard sign removes the first line of defence against these injuries, particularly for contractors, new crew, or personnel working outside their normal watch station.
Clearly marking every battery storage and charging point also supports safety rounds and permit-to-work checks, giving officers and safety officers a fast visual reference when auditing compliance during routine inspection, and reinforcing the correct use of gloves, aprons, and eye protection before batteries are handled.
HS0059 reproduces a registered ISO 7010 safety sign, the internationally recognised system of graphical symbols referenced by IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and widely adopted across the maritime industry (iso.org). Fitting a battery acid hazard sign wherever electrolyte is stored supports the general safety obligations of SOLAS, and gives Port State Control officers and classification society surveyors a clear, standardised reference during inspections. Using registered ISO 7010 pictograms rather than improvised or text-only warnings reduces the risk of a sign being flagged as non-conforming during survey.
Mount the battery acid hazard sign at eye level outside the entrance to any battery room or locker, and repeat it above or beside battery racks so the warning is visible before a casing or terminal is approached. In charging bays, position the sign above the charging point so it remains visible when leads or trolleys are in use. Clean the surrounding area of grease and salt residue before fitting the self-adhesive backing so the sign bonds securely for the long term.
Fit a battery acid hazard sign at every battery storage and charging point to keep crew protected and inspections straightforward. Browse the full Hazard Signs range or check related warnings in Fire Fighting Signs to complete your vessel’s signage.
