This IMO fire control sign identifies the location of a wheeled fire extinguisher, shown in the pictogram as a large extinguisher cylinder mounted on a trolley. Wheeled units carry a much greater capacity of extinguishing agent than portable extinguishers, typically 50kg of dry powder or a large CO2 charge, making them the first mobile response to significant fires in machinery spaces and other high-risk areas.
Wheeled extinguishers are stationed in engine rooms, machinery spaces, workshops, helidecks, and other areas where a fire could develop faster or larger than a portable extinguisher can handle, such as near fuel oil purifiers, generators, or bulk lubricating oil storage. This wheeled fire extinguisher sign is fixed directly above or beside the trolley’s parking position, so crew can locate the unit immediately and confirm it has not been moved from its designated station.
Because a wheeled extinguisher must be pushed or pulled to the seat of a fire, its parking position needs a clear, unobstructed path to the areas it protects. This wheeled fire extinguisher sign should never be hidden behind stored equipment, spare parts, or temporary staging that would slow crew down when seconds matter, and the deck or floor space around the unit should remain clear at all times.

During weekly and monthly fire equipment inspections, crew confirm that the wheeled extinguisher is present at its marked station, that its wheels and hose reel move freely, that the pressure gauge reads correctly, and that this sign remains legible. Any wheeled unit found relocated, discharged, or overdue for servicing should be corrected immediately, since these units are often the primary defence for the vessel’s most fire-prone spaces.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys, where the surveyor confirms that wheeled extinguishers are provided in the quantities and locations required for the vessel’s machinery spaces, that each unit is correctly signed at its station, and that crew can demonstrate moving and operating the unit under drill conditions. A vessel with correctly signed and maintained wheeled extinguishers shows that its heavier fire-fighting capacity is genuinely ready, not just present on a checklist.
New crew and cadets are shown this sign and the wheeled unit itself during engine room safety inductions, since operating a wheeled extinguisher correctly, positioning it upwind or at a safe distance before discharge, requires more training than a handheld unit. This sign is commonly ordered alongside other machinery space fire safety signs, such as the powder extinguisher sign used for portable units in the same spaces.
Because wheeled extinguisher stations are sometimes relocated during machinery upgrades or workshop reorganisation, it is worth confirming this signage after any layout change, so the trolley’s parking position always matches where the sign says it should be.
Wheeled units typically require two crew members to deploy effectively, one to manoeuvre the trolley and one to direct the hose, so drills should always practise this as a team task rather than assuming a single crew member can respond alone. Keeping the discharge hose neatly coiled and free of kinks also ensures the full agent charge reaches the fire without delay.
