The ISPS0025 restricted area security sign is a boundary marker used to define the outer edge of a designated restricted zone aboard a vessel or within a port facility. Unlike a personnel-access notice, this sign’s job is simple and unambiguous: it tells crew, contractors, stevedores, visitors and port officials exactly where a controlled security zone begins. It is typically the first physical indicator that a space falls under heightened access control, making it one of the most frequently specified items on any ship or terminal’s security signage schedule.
Within Safety Sign Hub’s ISPA Signs range, this restricted area security sign is most often fitted at the physical perimeter of a controlled zone — fencing lines, deck boundaries, bulkhead entry points, cargo terminal fence lines, and the outer limits of security zones surrounding the bridge, engine room or cargo control room. Rather than sitting at a single access door, it is commonly used repeatedly along a boundary line to reinforce that the entire perimeter, not just one entry point, is under the vessel’s or facility’s Security Plan. This makes it a key element in how a Ship Security Officer (SSO) or Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO) physically demarcates the zones described in the approved Security Plan.
The sign is produced in rigid marine-grade board or self-adhesive vinyl, both finished to withstand continuous UV exposure and saltwater spray without fading or delaminating. A photoluminescent option is available where the boundary line needs to remain visible during a power failure or low-light security patrol.
A restricted area security sign only does its job if the boundary it marks is unmistakable. Where perimeter marking is missing, faded or inconsistent, crew and shore personnel can genuinely be unsure where a controlled zone starts — and that ambiguity is exactly what unauthorised access, undeclared visitors and screening gaps exploit. Under the ISPS Code, security is built on layered physical zones, and each layer depends on people being able to see, at a glance, that they have crossed into a controlled area. A clearly posted restricted area security sign removes that ambiguity, supports the security culture the ISPS Code is built around, and gives watchkeepers and security patrols a fixed reference point when verifying that no one has crossed the line without authorisation.
ISPS0025 is not an ISO 7010 hazard pictogram and is never described as a registered ISO 7010 symbol — it is maritime security signage issued under the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, part of SOLAS Chapter XI-2). Its wording and placement should match the zone boundaries defined in the vessel’s Ship Security Plan (SSP) or the facility’s Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP), as maintained by the Ship Security Officer (SSO), Company Security Officer (CSO) or Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO). During ISPS audits, Port State Control officers and classification society surveyors routinely walk the perimeter of restricted zones checking that physical signage lines up with the approved Security Plan, so a restricted area security sign that is missing, mismatched or poorly placed can be flagged as a non-conformity.
Mount each restricted area security sign at eye level along the full extent of the zone boundary, not just at a single gate, so the perimeter reads consistently from any approach angle. Space signs at regular intervals on long fence lines or open decks, and repeat them at every gangway, hatch or access point that intersects the boundary.
Order the ISPS0025 restricted area security sign from our ISPA Signs range to keep every zone boundary on your vessel or facility clearly marked, and pair it with our personnel-specific ISPS0023 and ISPS0024 access signs or browse Mandatory Signs for complementary access-control signage.
