No Smoking Sign for Fire and Explosion Hazard Control
The No Smoking Sign is an IMO prohibition sign used aboard ships and in port and terminal facilities to warn against smoking in areas where a naked flame or spark could ignite flammable vapours, dust, or cargo. Smoking is one of the most common ignition sources in shipboard fires, making clear, consistently placed no smoking signage a fundamental part of a vessel’s fire prevention strategy.
When to Use This Sign
Install the No Smoking Sign at the entrance to fuel handling areas, bunkering stations, cargo holds, paint stores, and battery rooms, as well as throughout enclosed spaces where flammable vapours may accumulate. It should also be displayed in designated non-smoking accommodation areas and anywhere the vessel’s fire safety plan restricts smoking to specific, controlled locations only.
Design and Materials
This sign is printed on self-adhesive film in your choice of material – non-glow vinyl, or DNV Wheelmark certified Class C / Class D photoluminescent film. It carries a long-duration afterglow, remaining visible in darkness or during a blackout after normal light exposure. The sign is waterproof and resistant to saltwater exposure, with a glossy, wipe-clean finish that withstands the marine environment and routine cleaning.
Installation and Use
The No Smoking Sign uses a peel-and-stick self-adhesive backing, allowing installation directly onto doors, bulkheads, or entry points without tools or drilling. Clean and dry the mounting surface before application to ensure maximum adhesion in the marine environment. Position the sign at eye level at every entrance to a restricted or hazardous zone so it is clearly visible to crew, contractors, and visitors before they enter.
Compliance and Standards
This sign complies with IMO Resolution A.1116(30) governing graphical symbols for shipboard safety signage, and follows ISO 24409-2 for ship design and construction life-saving and fire protection symbols, with further guidance on workplace fire and hazardous area safety available from Safe Work Australia. These standards ensure the sign’s pictogram and wording are internationally recognised, supporting consistent fire-prevention practices across the maritime industry.
Fitting Into a Vessel’s Broader Fire Safety Plan
A clearly marked no smoking sign works alongside a vessel’s fire safety plan, fire extinguisher locations, and other hazardous-area signage to give crew, contractors, and visitors a consistent, easily understood warning system throughout zones where an ignition source could have serious consequences. Port state control inspections and classification society surveys routinely check that fire-prevention signage such as this is present, legible, and correctly positioned at every relevant access point.
