This Sudden Loud Noise sign warns crew and visitors that equipment nearby can produce an unexpected, sharp burst of sound loud enough to startle or damage hearing, such as a pressure relief valve, whistle or testing alarm. It follows the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format, showing an ear with an intense sound burst on the standard photoluminescent yellow triangle so the sudden loud noise hazard reads instantly regardless of the reader’s first language.
As SKU HS0030 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits pressure relief stations, whistle and horn housings, testing bays and any location where an unannounced burst of noise is a routine operational event.
The pictogram shows an ear with a hand-like sound wave graphic bursting toward it, rendered in black inside the warning triangle, a graphic that communicates the startle and hearing-damage risk of a sudden loud noise without needing a decibel reading.
Because the hazard is intermittent rather than constant, a sudden loud noise can catch someone off guard even after months of familiarity with the equipment, particularly if a valve or alarm activates unexpectedly during testing or an actual event. The photoluminescent base keeps the sudden loud noise warning visible for a period after lighting fails, useful for equipment tested or triggered during low-light watches.
An unexpected sudden loud noise can cause a startle reaction serious enough to trigger a fall or dropped tool, in addition to any direct hearing damage from the noise itself, making the marking valuable for physical safety as well as hearing conservation.
Standardised signage at pressure relief valves, whistles and testing equipment reminds crew to expect an intermittent burst of noise and to use hearing protection during scheduled tests, while also warning visitors and contractors who may not know a particular fitting can activate without warning. It supports the vessel’s hearing conservation programme by flagging intermittent noise sources that a constant noise reading might otherwise miss.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set used to flag acoustic hazards across the maritime industry, supporting the ISM Code’s requirement for documented control of noise exposure risks aboard vessels. A visible sudden loud noise warning at relief valves and testing stations is a documented control that internal safety auditors and classification surveyors look for when reviewing a vessel’s noise management arrangements.
Mount the sign directly on or beside the equipment capable of producing a sudden loud noise, at a height that is seen before someone works in close proximity, using the pre-drilled fixing holes with marine-grade fasteners for exterior deck fittings and the self-adhesive backing for interior testing bays and control panels. Schedule a check of the sign during routine equipment testing to confirm it remains legible and correctly positioned relative to the noise source.
