The Incineration Only sign marks the designated waste stream aboard ship that is permitted to go into the ship’s incinerator, keeping crew handling garbage in line with MARPOL Annex V and the ship’s approved Garbage Management Plan. Under the ISO 7010 mandatory-action standard this sign uses the blue circular pictogram with a white incinerator/flame symbol, instantly recognisable regardless of a crew member’s first language — a critical feature on multinational vessels where garbage segregation errors can trigger port state control detentions or MARPOL violations.
Although this sign governs waste segregation rather than personal protective equipment, the same ISO 7010 mandatory-action logic that protects a seafarer’s face and airway from harmful contaminants also protects the marine environment from prohibited discharges. Just as a face-protection sign stops a hazard before it reaches the body, the Incineration Only sign stops the wrong waste stream — plastics, oily rags, or chemical containers — before it reaches a combustion process that cannot safely handle it. Crew who internalise the discipline of reading and obeying mandatory signage in one area of shipboard life, such as face and respiratory protection, are demonstrably more likely to observe waste-segregation signage correctly as well; safety culture is cumulative, not compartmentalised.

Only specific categories of shipboard waste — typically paper, cardboard, food waste where permitted, and other approved combustibles — may be placed in incinerator-designated bins. MARPOL Annex V explicitly prohibits the incineration of certain materials, including plastics containing heavy metals, sewage sludge, and PCB-contaminated products, and many port states impose additional local restrictions on incinerator use inside their waters. Mounting the Incineration Only sign directly above or beside each authorised incinerator feed point or garbage segregation station removes any ambiguity for the crew member on garbage duty, particularly during night watches or in the noisy, low-visibility environment of an engine room garbage-handling space.
This sign is manufactured from durable, corrosion-resistant material suited to the humid, oil-exposed conditions typical of engine rooms and incinerator flats, and is available in rigid plastic or self-adhesive vinyl to suit bulkhead or bin-lid mounting. The photoluminescent-capable pictogram remains legible during power interruptions, supporting the ship’s Safety Management System requirements under the ISM Code for clear, unambiguous signage at all times, in all lighting conditions.
For vessels preparing for MARPOL Annex V compliance audits, Port State Control inspections, or ISM internal audits, correctly signed and segregated garbage stations — including a clearly posted Incineration Only sign — are one of the most frequently checked items. A missing or incorrect sign at the incinerator feed point is an easy, avoidable non-conformance. Fitting this sign alongside the ship’s other garbage segregation signage, such as Food Waste Only and No Plastic or Food Waste designations, gives the crew a complete, consistent visual system for shipboard waste management from galley to incinerator.
Safety Sign Hub supplies IMO-compliant, ISO 7010-conformant signage engineered for the marine and offshore environment, backed by full IMPA and ISSA cross-referencing so procurement teams and superintendents can specify with confidence. Every Incineration Only sign we supply meets the visual and durability standards expected under SOLAS-driven safety management practice. For the full regulatory framework behind shipboard safety signage, see the IMO SOLAS convention.
Vessel operators sourcing an Incineration Only sign should also consider pairing it with clear bin labelling and crew toolbox talks during onboarding, since new crew members are the group most likely to misplace prohibited waste in an incinerator-designated bin. A well-placed, durable Incineration Only sign, refreshed whenever it fades or is damaged, is a small investment that protects the vessel from costly MARPOL Annex V non-conformances and keeps the whole garbage management chain, from galley to incinerator, fully auditable during any Port State Control or flag state inspection.
