This Floor Level Obstacle sign warns crew and visitors that a low-lying trip hazard, such as a sill, coaming, cable run or raised threshold, is present underfoot in the marked area. It follows the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format, showing a figure catching their foot on a raised object on the standard photoluminescent yellow triangle so the hazard reads instantly to crew, contractors and visitors regardless of language.
As SKU HS0013 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits watertight door sills, hatch coamings, deck-level pipe runs, workshop thresholds and any walkway where a floor level obstacle is a recurring hazard.
The pictogram shows a figure mid-stumble with one foot caught against a low rectangular object, rendered in black inside the warning triangle, an instantly readable graphic that needs no translation for crew from different backgrounds or for visiting port and survey personnel.
Because a floor level obstacle is often a fixed structural feature that cannot be removed, such as a watertight sill or coaming, the sign’s role is to keep the hazard front of mind every time someone transits the space rather than only during the first orientation walk-through. The photoluminescent base keeps the floor level obstacle warning visible for a period after lighting fails, which matters most in alleyways and hatch areas where a trip in the dark carries real injury risk.
Trips over sills, coamings and raised thresholds are among the most common injuries recorded aboard vessels, precisely because a floor level obstacle is easy to overlook when someone is carrying equipment, focused on a task, or simply not looking down.
Standardised signage at every recurring floor level obstacle reduces that risk by giving a constant visual reminder at the exact point of hazard, supporting the vessel’s slip, trip and fall prevention programme. It also helps new crew and contractors who have not yet learned the layout of a particular ship recognise a floor level obstacle before they reach it rather than after they have already caught a foot.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set used to mark slip, trip and fall hazards across the maritime industry, supporting the ISM Code’s requirement for documented hazard identification and control. A visible floor level obstacle warning at coamings, sills and thresholds is exactly the kind of low-cost, high-value control that Port State Control officers and internal safety auditors look for when reviewing a vessel’s injury prevention record.
Fit the sign at eye level immediately before the obstacle itself, on the bulkhead, door frame or adjacent surface closest to the hazard, so it is seen in the final few steps before someone reaches the floor level obstacle. Use the pre-drilled fixing holes with marine-grade fasteners for exterior weather decks and high-traffic alleyways, and the self-adhesive backing for interior thresholds and workshop applications.
Review placement periodically, particularly after refits or layout changes, to confirm this warning still sits exactly where crew make their footing decision, and replace any sign that has faded to the point where the pictogram is no longer sharp.
