Fire Hose Sign – FS0045-B
This IMO fire control sign identifies a fire hose station, marking the location of a fire hose reel or hose connection point so crew can find it immediately during an emergency. The fire hose sign combines the standard hose reel pictogram with the word “Fire hose” and the IMO flame symbol, giving instant recognition to crew of any nationality without relying on written language alone.
Where this fire hose sign is used
This sign is mounted directly above or beside a fire hose reel, hose box, or hose connection point in corridors, engine rooms, accommodation spaces, and open deck areas, wherever SOLAS fire safety requirements call for fixed hose stations to be clearly marked. Because fire hoses are typically the first line of response to a developing fire, this sign needs to be visible from a distance along a corridor or across an open deck, allowing crew to locate the nearest hose station quickly under smoke, poor lighting, or the stress of a real emergency.
On vessels with multiple hose stations serving different zones or fire sections, this fire hose sign is placed consistently at each location so that the sign itself, not just local knowledge of the ship, guides crew and visitors to the equipment. This is particularly important for new crew joining a vessel, and for visiting surveyors, contractors, or port authority inspectors unfamiliar with the layout.
During fire drills, this sign is used as a training reference point, with crew practising the route from their muster station to the nearest marked hose station and confirming the reel itself is correctly maintained, uncoiled without obstruction, and its coupling free of corrosion. Any hose station found without a clearly visible sign, or with a sign that has become damaged, faded, or obscured by stowed equipment, should be corrected immediately, since a missing or unclear sign can add critical seconds to a response.
This sign is checked during SOLAS fire safety surveys, where the surveyor confirms that every fire hose station shown on the vessel’s fire control plan is fitted with clear, correctly worded signage and that the hose and reel behind it are in serviceable condition. Fire hose signage forming part of a complete, unbroken fire safety marking scheme is one of the more commonly reviewed items during these inspections, since hose stations are a primary firefighting resource on most vessels.
New crew are introduced to fire hose sign locations during safety inductions and familiarisation rounds, since being able to locate the nearest hose station without hesitation is a basic firefighting competency expected of all crew regardless of department. This sign is commonly ordered alongside other primary firefighting signage such as the fire extinguisher sign and the fixed fire-extinguishing bottle sign, so a vessel’s full firefighting equipment inventory is consistently marked with matching photoluminescent signage.
Fire hose stations and their signage are reviewed during routine equipment audits and after any refit, repositioning of equipment, or corridor and deck modification, and this sign should be checked at the same time to confirm it still correctly marks the hose station’s actual position. A relocated hose station left with no sign, or a sign left in place after equipment has moved, is a common finding during external fire safety audits and should be corrected as soon as it is identified.
Because photoluminescent signage depends on ambient light exposure to charge before it can glow, this fire hose sign should be positioned where it receives normal working light rather than in a permanently shadowed recess, so it performs as intended if main lighting fails during a fire or blackout. Crew carrying out lighting checks as part of routine safety rounds often use fire hose signage as a convenient visual indicator that emergency lighting coverage in a given area remains adequate.
