This ‘B’ self-closing fire door sign identifies a hinged fire door within a ‘B’ class fire division, shown by the curved swing-arc arrow closing down over the fire-division bar. ‘B’ class divisions carry a lower fire-resistance rating than ‘A’ class divisions under SOLAS Chapter II-2, and this door’s self-closing mechanism swings shut automatically after use, restoring the division’s fire integrity without relying on crew action.
A self-closing fire door propped or wedged open loses its protective value the moment it is defeated – smoke and flame can pass straight through the division it was fitted to seal. This sign reminds crew and passengers to let the door close and never obstruct its swing.
Self-closing fire doors of this type are fitted at ‘B’ class partition openings throughout accommodation areas, including corridors, cabin bulkheads, and internal stairwells, wherever a fire division is broken by a doorway. The self-closing fire door sign is mounted directly on or beside the door leaf so it is seen every time the door is passed through.
Fire door and division classifications follow SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the associated Fire Safety Systems Code, which set the fire-resistance rating and self-closing requirements for doors fitted within ‘B’ class divisions. Surveyors checking every self-closing fire door and its signage during inspections expect clear, photoluminescent identification at each opening.
Installing this self-closing fire door sign is straightforward: the peel-and-stick backing adheres directly to the door leaf or adjacent bulkhead, and the photoluminescent film charges under normal lighting so the pictogram remains visible if power and lighting are lost.
