Arc Flash Hazard Sign HS0080

The Arc Flash Hazard Sign (SKU HS0080) is the standard ISO 7010 pictogram for Arc Flash, shown in the black-on-yellow warning triangle format used across the ISO 7010 hazard series. It is fitted wherever crew, contractors, or visiting personnel could be exposed to the sudden, high-energy electrical discharge produced by a fault in live switchgear, distribution panels, or motor control centres. The sign gives an immediate, language-independent alert, telling anyone nearby to stop, assess the risk, and apply the correct isolation procedure and personal protective equipment before any enclosure is opened.

Within Safety Sign Hub’s Hazard Signs range, HS0080 sits alongside our other electrical and energy-hazard warnings as the dedicated arc flash hazard sign for vessels, offshore platforms, and shore-based marine facilities. Typical shipboard locations include engine room switchboards, generator panels, motor control centres, HV/LV transformer rooms, thruster control rooms, and electrical workshops where live testing takes place. Positioning this sign at each access point gives engineers, electricians, and visiting surveyors a consistent, at-a-glance warning before they approach energised equipment.

Like every sign in this range, HS0080 is produced on rigid marine-grade substrate or as a self-adhesive photoluminescent label, and is manufactured to resist saltwater spray, humidity, UV exposure, and vibration typical of an engine room or switchroom environment. This construction keeps the pictogram legible for the working life of the vessel, even in compartments rarely opened to fresh air.

Why Arc Flash Hazards Matter

An arc flash event releases intense heat, pressure, and light in a fraction of a second, and can cause severe burns, hearing damage, or fatal injury to anyone standing nearby, even without direct contact with live conductors. On board a ship, electrical faults are made more dangerous by confined compartments, limited escape routes, and the difficulty of getting an injured crew member to advanced medical care while at sea. Marking known risk points with a dedicated arc flash hazard sign gives crew a visual cue to maintain safe approach distances, wear appropriate PPE, and follow lock-out and tag-out procedures before any panel is opened. It also supports permit-to-work systems and routine safety rounds, where inspectors expect hazard points to be clearly signed.

Compliance and Certification

HS0080 reproduces a pictogram from the ISO 7010 register of graphical symbols for safety signs, so its shape, colour, and layout match the internationally recognised standard. Shipboard signage is also expected to align with general IMO guidance on safety signs and symbols, and with the broader safety-management obligations set out under SOLAS, which call for hazards to be identified and communicated clearly to everyone on board regardless of native language. Classification society surveyors and Port State Control officers routinely check that electrical spaces carry appropriate hazard warnings, and a missing or faded arc flash hazard sign can be logged as a deficiency. Fitting recognised ISO 7010 signage is a straightforward way to demonstrate that hazard communication has been properly addressed.

Installation Recommendations

Mount the arc flash hazard sign directly on or beside the switchgear, panel, or enclosure it refers to, at eye level where possible, so it is seen before a door or cover is opened. In larger electrical spaces, repeat the sign at each entrance as well as on individual panels, since crew may approach from more than one direction. Choose the photoluminescent option for compartments that could lose lighting during a power failure, and use the rigid substrate version on exterior or high-vibration mounting points.

  • Reproduces the registered ISO 7010 pictogram for Arc Flash
  • Available in rigid marine-grade board or self-adhesive photoluminescent vinyl
  • Built to withstand saltwater exposure, UV fading, and engine room vibration
  • Photoluminescent option stays visible during power loss or low light
  • Sized and formatted for switchboards, MCCs, and HV/LV electrical spaces

Order HS0080 to keep every electrical space on board clearly marked, and browse the full Hazard Signs range or our Fire Fighting Signs for other essential shipboard safety signage.
