This Explosive Atmosphere sign warns crew and contractors that flammable vapour, dust or gas may be present at concentrations capable of igniting, making ignition sources and non-rated equipment a serious risk in the marked area. This sign combines the standard exploding-fragment pictogram with a bold “DANGER – Explosive atmosphere” text panel beneath it, pairing the instant visual cue with an explicit written instruction.
As SKU HS0035 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits cargo tank vent zones, fuel bunkering stations, paint spray areas and any compartment classified as a hazardous area under the vessel’s zoning plan.
The upper pictogram shows a radiating burst of fragments exploding outward, while the lower panel spells out “DANGER” in bold capitals followed by “Explosive atmosphere” in smaller text, a combined format useful where an explicit English instruction reinforces the zoning restrictions that apply to a specific compartment beyond what the pictogram alone conveys.
Because an explosive atmosphere can form and disperse without visible signs, the wording gives an unambiguous reminder that hot work, non-intrinsically-safe equipment and naked flames are prohibited while the classification applies. The photoluminescent base keeps the explosive atmosphere warning visible for a period after lighting fails, relevant at tank vent zones and bunkering stations accessed during cargo operations at night.
An ignition inside an explosive atmosphere can cause catastrophic damage in seconds, so clear marking of hazardous area boundaries is one of the most important controls a vessel maintains for cargo and bunkering safety. Standardised signage reinforces the zoning plan by marking the physical boundary of a hazardous area, reminding crew and contractors to check equipment ratings and avoid ignition sources before entering. It also gives visiting stevedores, bunker suppliers and surveyors an immediate, unmistakable warning at zones they may not recognise from the vessel’s general layout alone.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the combined pictogram-and-text warning format referenced in hazardous area classification and the IMDG Code’s requirements for flammable cargo and bunkering operations. A visible explosive atmosphere warning at tank vents and bunkering stations is a documented control that classification surveyors and Port State Control officers specifically check for when reviewing a vessel’s hazardous area management.
Mount the sign at every boundary of a zone classified as an explosive atmosphere risk, including tank vent areas, bunkering manifolds and paint spray booths, at a height that is seen before entering the zone. Use the pre-drilled fixing holes with marine-grade fasteners for exterior deck fittings exposed to weather, and the self-adhesive backing for interior spray booth and equipment room applications. Review boundary markings whenever the vessel’s hazardous area zoning plan is updated or a compartment’s use changes.
