This Explosive Material sign flags areas and containers where substances capable of detonation are stored, staged or handled aboard a vessel or at a shore facility. The design follows the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format: a black-bordered triangle on a fluorescent yellow ground containing the stylised exploding-fragment graphic that reads instantly to any crew member, contractor or surveyor regardless of first language. As SKU HS0002 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built to survive continuous marine exposure and suits pyrotechnic lockers, flare stores, blasting cap cabinets, ordnance holds and dangerous-goods staging areas alike.
The pictogram shows a dark, radiating burst of fragments exploding outward from a central point inside the black triangle border, the same graphic used across IMDG-regulated shipping and shore-based explosives handling to mark Class 1 dangerous goods. There is no wording on the pictogram itself, which is deliberate: an explosive material warning has to be understood in an instant, in low light, through smoke or by a non-English-speaking stevedore, and a text-free symbol removes that risk. The photoluminescent base coat keeps the explosive material warning visible for a period after the lights fail, which is precisely when a crew moving to muster stations needs the hazard to remain obvious.
An explosive material incident is one of the few onboard events capable of causing catastrophic hull damage or loss of life in seconds, so the margin for a missed or unclear warning is effectively zero. Standardised explosive material signage tells crew, contractors and emergency responders exactly where detonation-capable substances are staged, keeping hot work, static-generating activity and unauthorised access away from the marked zone. It also gives a clear reference point for the vessel’s dangerous goods manifest and stowage plan, so that anyone conducting a walk-round, drill or cargo inspection can immediately cross-check the physical explosive material marking against the paperwork.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set, and it supports the segregation and hazard communication requirements set out in the IMDG Code for Class 1 explosives carried, stowed or staged aboard vessels and in port areas. Displaying a compliant explosive material warning at the point of hazard is exactly the kind of documented control that Port State Control officers, classification surveyors and internal ISM auditors expect to see, and it materially strengthens a vessel’s dangerous goods safety case during inspection, especially when the marked area is cross-referenced against the ship’s IMDG stowage plan and dangerous goods manifest.
Fit the sign directly on or immediately beside the door, hatch or cabinet housing the explosive material, at a height that is clearly visible to anyone approaching rather than tucked behind fittings or cable runs. Use the pre-drilled holes with marine-grade fasteners on exterior bulkheads and weather decks so the sign withstands vibration, spray and heavy weather, while the self-adhesive backing is suitable for dry interior lockers and cabinets. Check the sign during routine safety rounds to confirm it remains unobstructed, legible and securely fixed, since a dislodged or faded explosive material sign defeats the purpose of the warning entirely, and a replacement should be fitted as soon as any fading, cracking or lifting is noticed.
Order the HS0002 Explosive Material sign now to close out this hazard communication requirement ahead of your next Port State Control visit or internal audit. Safety Sign Hub stocks the complete IMPA/ISSA-coded hazard sign range and ships marine-grade signage across Australia and to vessels in port, with bulk pricing available for fleet orders.
