This MS0054 mandatory sign restricts access to a designated space to authorised crew members only, keeping passengers, contractors, and visitors out of operational areas that are not intended for general use. Featuring the ISO 7010 blue circular mandatory-action pictogram alongside bold “CREW ONLY” text, this sign is one of the simplest and most widely used access-control signs aboard any vessel, from cargo ships to passenger ferries.
Manufactured from durable, photoluminescent material, this sign remains legible in low-light stairwells, machinery spaces, and internal alleyways where crew-only areas are commonly located. Its rigid, UV- and corrosion-resistant construction is built to withstand constant handling, cleaning, and the humid marine atmosphere, ensuring the restriction remains clearly visible for the working life of the vessel.
Vessels contain many spaces that are operationally sensitive, physically hazardous, or simply not designed for passenger or visitor traffic – machinery spaces, crew mess areas, working alleyways, and technical compartments among them. Under a vessel’s Safety Management System and the ISM Code, access to these areas must be controlled to prevent untrained or unauthorised persons from entering spaces where they could be injured or could interfere with crew operations. A clear “crew only” sign at every relevant doorway removes any ambiguity, reducing reliance on verbal instruction and helping crew enforce access restrictions confidently and consistently, particularly during busy port calls when many non-crew personnel may be aboard.
This sign is produced in accordance with the ISO 7010 international standard for graphical safety symbols, ensuring instant recognition by multilingual crews, passengers, and shore visitors regardless of nationality. It supports the access-control measures expected under a vessel’s Safety Management System and the ISM Code, and where fitted at security-sensitive boundaries also reinforces the vessel’s Ship Security Plan under the ISPS Code. Maintaining clear, durable restriction signage throughout the ship is consistent with the safety obligations set out under SOLAS, the International Maritime Organization’s convention governing safety aboard ships.
Mount this sign at eye level directly on or immediately beside the door, hatch, or stairwell entrance it restricts, ensuring it is clearly visible to anyone approaching from the passenger or public side of the vessel. Clean the mounting surface thoroughly before application to ensure strong adhesion in humid marine conditions, and consider a mechanical fixing in addition to adhesive backing on doors subject to heavy traffic or frequent cleaning. Include this sign in routine safety-sign inspections so that fading or damage is identified and replaced before the restriction becomes unclear.
Every space aboard that is not intended for passenger or visitor access should be clearly marked crew only, so that everyone aboard – crew, contractors, and visitors alike – immediately understands where they are and are not permitted to go, supporting both safety and good order throughout the vessel.
Keep restricted spaces clearly marked and your vessel’s access-control procedures easy to enforce with the MS0054 Crew Only Sign – a simple, durable solution used throughout the maritime industry.
