This ‘A’ self-closing sliding fire door sign identifies a sliding fire door within an ‘A’ class fire division, shown by the horizontal directional arrow marking the door’s travel path along its track. The self-closing mechanism drives the door shut automatically, restoring the division’s fire integrity without relying on crew action.
A self-closing sliding fire door that is wedged, chocked, or left running on its track loses its protective value the moment it is defeated – smoke and flame can pass straight through the division it was fitted to seal. This sign reminds crew and passengers to keep the track and door leaf clear at all times.
Self-closing sliding fire doors of this type are fitted at ‘A’ class bulkhead openings in machinery spaces, engine room casings, and other locations where a hinged door is impractical and a sliding mechanism is used instead. The self-closing sliding fire door sign is mounted directly on or beside the door leaf so it is seen every time the opening is passed through.
Fire door and division classifications follow SOLAS Chapter II-2 and the associated Fire Safety Systems Code, which set the fire-resistance rating and self-closing requirements for doors fitted within ‘A’ class divisions. Surveyors checking every self-closing sliding fire door and its signage during inspections expect clear, photoluminescent identification at each opening.
Installing this self-closing sliding fire door sign is straightforward: the peel-and-stick backing adheres directly to the door leaf, frame, or adjacent bulkhead, and the photoluminescent film charges under normal lighting so the pictogram remains visible if power and lighting are lost.
