This Flammable Material sign warns crew, stevedores and visitors that combustible substances are stored, handled or transported in the marked area. Manufactured to the internationally recognised ISO 7010 warning pictogram format, the sign uses the standard photoluminescent yellow triangle with a black flame symbol that is instantly understood regardless of the reader’s first language, which matters on multinational crews and in busy port terminals where a split-second glance has to convey the hazard correctly. As SKU HS0001 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous exposure to a marine environment and is equally suited to engine rooms, chemical stores, paint lockers, bunkering stations and shore-side fuel depots.
The pictogram itself shows a single stylised flame rising from a horizontal bar inside a black-bordered triangle on a fluorescent yellow ground. That flame-over-bar graphic is the globally standardised symbol for flammable material and is deliberately free of text so the warning reads instantly in poor light, through smoke, or to a non-English-speaking crew member. The fluorescent base coat also means the sign remains legible after the lights have gone and briefly continues to glow in a blackout, reinforcing the flammable material warning exactly when situational awareness is most compromised.
Flammable material presents one of the highest-consequence risks aboard any vessel, since a fire that starts near stored fuels, solvents or gas cylinders can spread through a hull structure far faster than a shore-based building. Clear, standardised flammable material signage gives crew an instant visual cue to keep ignition sources, hot work and unauthorised personnel away from the marked zone, and it supports the vessel’s fire prevention plan by making hazardous storage areas obvious to anyone moving through the ship, including contractors and surveyors who are unfamiliar with the layout. Consistent flammable material labelling across sister vessels and shore facilities also reduces the chance that an experienced hand becomes complacent on an unfamiliar ship.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage practice and the ISO 7010 graphical symbol set referenced by flag-state and classification-society guidance, and it supports the hazard communication obligations that apply wherever flammable substances are carried, stowed or bunkered under the IMDG Code. Placing a recognised flammable material warning at the point of hazard is a straightforward, low-cost way to demonstrate a proactive safety culture during Port State Control inspections, ISM audits and internal safety walk-throughs, and it is the kind of documented, photographed compliance measure that surveyors specifically look for when reviewing a vessel’s hazard communication arrangements.
Mount the sign at eye level directly on or immediately beside the entrance to the flammable material storage area, bunkering manifold, paint locker or fuel store, using the pre-drilled fixing holes or the self-adhesive backing depending on the surface. On exterior bulkheads and weather decks, secure all four corners with marine-grade fasteners so the sign cannot lift in heavy weather, and on interior stores a rivet or screw fixing outlasts adhesive alone in humid, oily engine-room conditions. Keep the sign clear of pipework, cable trays or opening doors that could obstruct the line of sight, and inspect it during routine rounds to confirm the surface stays clean enough for the flammable material pictogram to be read at a glance.
Order the HS0001 Flammable Material sign today to close out a hazard communication gap before your next audit or Port State Control inspection. Safety Sign Hub stocks the full IMPA/ISSA-coded hazard sign range and ships marine-grade signage across Australia and to vessels in port, with bulk pricing available for fleet-wide rollouts.
