This Explosion Risk sign warns crew and contractors that the space or equipment nearby can generate an explosive atmosphere or contains materials capable of exploding under certain conditions. The sign combines the standard black explosion-burst hazard triangle with a bold “DANGER – Explosion risk” text panel beneath it, giving anyone approaching the area an instant visual cue plus an explicit written instruction in a single fixture.
As SKU HS0043 in the Hazard Signs range, it is built for continuous marine exposure and suits fuel stores, paint lockers, battery rooms and any compartment where flammable vapours or reactive materials can accumulate.
The upper section shows the familiar black explosion-burst symbol inside a warning triangle, while the lower panel spells out “DANGER” in bold capitals followed by “Explosion risk” in smaller text, a combined pictogram-and-wording format that leaves no doubt about the severity of the hazard behind the door.
Because an explosive atmosphere is not always visible or detectable by smell alone, the written panel gives crew and visiting contractors the specific context a generic triangle alone cannot provide. The photoluminescent base keeps the explosion risk warning visible for a period after lighting fails, useful in stores and machinery spaces where a fire event and a loss of main lighting can occur together.
Explosive atmospheres and reactive materials are among the most severe hazards found aboard a vessel, and clear signage at every access point supports strict controls over ignition sources such as naked flames, unrated electrical equipment and hot work permits.
Explosion risk signage reminds crew and visiting contractors that a permit-to-work and gas-free certificate may be required before entry or hot work in the space, and gives supervisors a clear reference point when briefing new starters on which compartments carry an explosion hazard. It also supports emergency response planning by clearly marking spaces that require special caution during a fire or damage-control situation.
This sign is produced to align with IMO shipboard safety signage guidance and the combined pictogram-and-text warning format used across shipping and industrial hazardous-area safety, supporting the ISM Code’s requirement for documented control of explosion and fire hazards. A visible explosion risk warning at fuel stores, paint lockers and battery rooms is a documented control that classification surveyors and internal safety auditors expect to see during a fire and explosion safety review.
Mount the sign at eye level on every door, hatch and access point leading into a space presenting an explosion risk, positioned so it is seen before the door is opened or hot work is planned nearby. Use the pre-drilled fixing holes with marine-grade fasteners for exterior and weatherdeck access points, and the self-adhesive backing for interior stores and locker doors. Confirm during hot work permit reviews and fire drills that the sign remains legible at every relevant access point, particularly after a door or bulkhead has been repainted.
